Great looking, Easy Collage Effect
Today we are going to create a collage effect Photoshop. We will take a central, main image as our focal point and use some image and effects to liven it up. This is a great way to showcase an Image, and emphasize a theme instead of doing a traditional photo collage. And on top of it all, this is an easy effect to do!
First we want to start off by collecting some images:
Elephant
Giraffe
Zebra
Paint Brush
Splatter Brushes
Background Texture (the first one)
Step 1
Open up the elephant in Photoshop. Using the Pen tool go in and cut him out. If you don’t know how to use the pen tool to cut out the elephant, you can go to this site.
Step 2
Now open up a document with a size of1680x1050px and drag the elephant in. Typically you shouldn’t do this, but I am going to stretch the elephant wide a little bit, because he looks a little too skinny in the photo. So shrink and widen it something like how I have mine.
Step 3
Open up your levels (control + L) and bring in the arrows, so you have something like I have.
Step 4
Open up the giraffe image, and cut him out like you did with the elephant. don’t worry about the hair on the back or the lack of feet, you won’t see them when we put it in place. So after you cut the giraffe in, bring him into our document.
Step 5
We are going to re size the giraffe and angle him a little so it is coming out the back of the elephant like so.
Step 6
Lets open up the levels (control + L). Looking at the levels, they are set pretty good already, so we don’t have to adjust them.
Step 7
Now lets go and grab the zebra. I cropped the head of mine because that is all we are going to need. For this one we are going to have to go in and cut out the hair. Unfortunately since this photo was free, it wasn’t the greatest quality for cutting out hair. What I did was add a layer mask to the zebra layer, and using a very soft brush I faded the top part of the hair. This will work fine for what we are going to do. Now bring him into our document.
Step 8
We are now going to duplicate the zebra layer with control J. Then go into edit>transform>flip horizontally. Now bring it over to the side with the giraffe. Do the same thing with the giraffe.
Step 9
Now that we have everything roughly in place, we can refine our layout.
Step 10
For better organization I am going to put all the animals in a folder.
Step 11
The next thing we want to do is bring in our texture. Stretch it out to fit the entire document. Now I want to go in and start taking out some of the hard lines. So to do that we are going to use the clone tool. Alt + click on an area that has a similar texture (without the line) and then click on the line. Continue doing this until the line is gone. Watch out for repeating shapes that would make it look like the texture was cloned. Our goal is to make it look like we didn’t do anything to it.
Step 12
Make sure the texture is the top layer, then change the blend mode to multiply. Open up Hue/Saturation (control + U) and adjust the saturation to +30. We are also going to lighten it up with the curves (control + m).
Step 13
I am going to grab my animals folder and move them over to the right. Now I am going to change the levels of that folder to make the animals a little darker.
Step 14
Now comes the more creative part. The brushes I had you get at the beginning we are going to use a few of them to get some action behind the animals (How to install them). So first lets create a new layer and start using the brush painted brushes. I am going to use a variety of yellow, orange and red.
Step 15
Now we are going to do the same thing with the splatter brush.
Step 16
There you go. I am just going to add a headline to it and I am finished. You can go wild with it, use different paint brushes, different shapes, different textures, add animals, whatever you want.
